internet explorer and windows explorer windows

for some reason, my internet explorer and windows
explorer windows are grouped together in my taskbar.
does anyone know how to separate them into 2 different
groups?

Right-click start, properties, Taskbar tab, clear "Group similar taskbar buttons."

In your registry check if BrowseNewProcess is set to YES

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BrowseNewProcess]
"BrowseNewProcess"="yes"
