Well I don't know the exact answer but some websites (Yahoo mail I think is
an example) use the language "Java" as part of their function. This is a
language like BASIC - you can write stand alone programs with it
(Applications or Apps) or have it run inside a web page as a sort of
"miniature App" or Applet. It is not the same a JavaScript which is also
used on web pages although the "Script" version does look like it.

To run these programs (Apps) or Applets you must have the Java Run Time
Engine or JRE which is also known as the Java Virtual Machine. The JRE is an
on the fly interpreter which converts the Java program into codes you
machine can understand. Each JRE is specific to the machine you are using
but this means the programs or Applets can remain the same and will run on
any machine, so you write a program on the MAC it will run on a PC etc.

I guess the layman's version analogy would be two people trying to talk when
one only knows French and English and the other only German and English.
They would write their letters in English - and they could be read by anyone
else who spoke English too.

Microsoft used to do their own version of Java for Windows but the language
is actually the intellectual property of Sun Microsystems, and after a big
legal argument MS finally decided to concede the dispute and the current
Java Run Time (Virtual Machine) is supplied by Sun.

Now, the reason I mention all this is because that error appears to have
been issued by the Java Run Time experiencing an exception or error outside
of itself - but errors are sometimes misleading. You car may grind to a halt
with an overheated motor and that's what you'll see because it's obvious,
but the original "Error" may be that last week you topped up the water and
the radiator cap didn't seal properly. The web page may have had an
erroneous value that the JRE didn't catch so it got out of control when
passed to the real machine for action, or maybe it wasn't an error on the
page but some value that the JRE accepts and then passes on to some other
software on the real machine that has an error.

Not being a Java expert it's hard to say, but it looks like some attempt to
get or set a default color triggered the problem in the awt.dll dynamic link
library. Not sure if I am right but I think this could be a fault in the dll
itself or something it tries to use (part of Windows or the hardware) which
fell over.

I do know of a couple of complaints affecting a recent "Upgrade" of the JRE.
Seems like the people affected removed a very recent "Update" and fixed the
problem, although I imagine if there is a problem that Sun are already
working on it by now.

Have you recently updated Java, it's automatically offered in many cases and
you would just have to click "Yes". Do you visit Windows Update regularly or
have updates set on Automatic? You won't get the JRE update from the Windows
website, but getting and staying current with updates is the best way to go
for most home users. I think this is a sensible starting point if you can
remember recent events. If it's not affecting you critically then making
changes one at a time helps avoid the problem where you change things and
make it worse :)

Hope this short explanation helps a bit, I'm sure the "Purists" can find
some minor omissions but if you understand a bit about what's going on it
usually helps.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to explain this - I will investigate
further now.

Hi Charlie -
Thank you so much for your reply. I wil investigate a Java update. I am
set up on regular updates for Microsoft. I worked on this problem quite a
bit last night.

Here is something wierd. When I click the IE internet search button, the
Google search window apprears on the left side of the screen and I can browse
although the results are not as detailed as using the Google search in my
horizontal toolbar or searching directly from Google's home page (these two
search methods still close IE when a search is attempted). Thanks again, I
really appreciate your answer and your help Charlie.

Well let me say again I am not sure this is the problem but I do recall a
couple of complaints that a recent Java update seemed to upset some
machines. Also, I have heard of the Google toolbar causing problems and also
on occasion the Yahoo toolbar... frankly I find no use for either so have
never tried. IMHO the best thing to add to IE is nothing, that way when IE
gets an update there is less hooked into it to get annoyed about the update.

Incidentally I also use FireFox for diagnostics, it is better to have a
choice than to have people locked out of the internet completely and getting
increasingly annoyed with IE in my opinion. Most IE problems are really
nothing to do with IE, but are the result of something being "Altered" and
when IE gets an update whatever "Altered" it's environment chokes and causes
a problem. Unfortunately since IE is so popular it has more "Bolt on"
accessories than anything else and I doubt that the programmers at MS can
anticipate all the permutations.

I have updates auto download but choose to wait for the warning and install
while I'm here rather than have the things totally automatic... for one
thing it gives the chance to turn off excess running tasks like Antivirus...
although with the few machines I do have set on fully automatic I have never
seen a major problem. In a business environment of course you can't have
machines spontaneously re-booting all over the place :)

Tools>Manage Add Ons is a very useful option because you can disable things
without doing any permanent damage. By all means try things from there if
you feel some of your problems might be related.

Hi Charlie -
Thank you so much for your reply. I wil investigate a Java update. I am
set up on regular updates for Microsoft. I worked on this problem quite a
bit last night.

Here is something wierd. When I click the IE internet search button, the
Google search window apprears on the left side of the screen and I can
browse
although the results are not as detailed as using the Google search in my
horizontal toolbar or searching directly from Google's home page (these
two
search methods still close IE when a search is attempted). Thanks again,
I
really appreciate your answer and your help Charlie.

Well I don't know the exact answer but some websites (Yahoo mail I think
is
an example) use the language "Java" as part of their function. This is a
language like BASIC - you can write stand alone programs with it
(Applications or Apps) or have it run inside a web page as a sort of
"miniature App" or Applet. It is not the same a JavaScript which is also
used on web pages although the "Script" version does look like it.

To run these programs (Apps) or Applets you must have the Java Run Time
Engine or JRE which is also known as the Java Virtual Machine. The JRE is
an
on the fly interpreter which converts the Java program into codes you
machine can understand. Each JRE is specific to the machine you are using
but this means the programs or Applets can remain the same and will run
on
any machine, so you write a program on the MAC it will run on a PC etc.

I guess the layman's version analogy would be two people trying to talk
when
one only knows French and English and the other only German and English.
They would write their letters in English - and they could be read by
anyone
else who spoke English too.

Microsoft used to do their own version of Java for Windows but the
language
is actually the intellectual property of Sun Microsystems, and after a
big
legal argument MS finally decided to concede the dispute and the current
Java Run Time (Virtual Machine) is supplied by Sun.

Now, the reason I mention all this is because that error appears to have
been issued by the Java Run Time experiencing an exception or error
outside
of itself - but errors are sometimes misleading. You car may grind to a
halt
with an overheated motor and that's what you'll see because it's obvious,
but the original "Error" may be that last week you topped up the water
and
the radiator cap didn't seal properly. The web page may have had an
erroneous value that the JRE didn't catch so it got out of control when
passed to the real machine for action, or maybe it wasn't an error on the
page but some value that the JRE accepts and then passes on to some other
software on the real machine that has an error.

Not being a Java expert it's hard to say, but it looks like some attempt
to
get or set a default color triggered the problem in the awt.dll dynamic
link
library. Not sure if I am right but I think this could be a fault in the
dll
itself or something it tries to use (part of Windows or the hardware)
which
fell over.

I do know of a couple of complaints affecting a recent "Upgrade" of the
JRE.
Seems like the people affected removed a very recent "Update" and fixed
the
problem, although I imagine if there is a problem that Sun are already
working on it by now.

Have you recently updated Java, it's automatically offered in many cases
and
you would just have to click "Yes". Do you visit Windows Update regularly
or
have updates set on Automatic? You won't get the JRE update from the
Windows
website, but getting and staying current with updates is the best way to
go
for most home users.
