Internal/external drives

J

JimL

I read a day or two ago that I should probably connect my external hard
drive as an internal hard drive on my laptop.

SAY WHAT?

I never heard of such a thing. Is this something from a local opium parlor?

Since you didn't give us a link to what you read or a direct quote (if you
read this in meatspace as opposed to online), we can't really address this.

The only way to connect an external hard drive internally is to use eSATA
and I don't know if any laptops would have an eSATA port.

Sorry. It was an oblique comment on a web site I can't remember.

It's a clear enough subject - hooking an external drive up as if it were
internal. But clear doesn't mean easy. Since I can't tell anything about
it I was just hoping someone could tell me.

Like Malke, I can't tell you--at least not unless you tell us what
this is all about: *why* you might do this.

That was Andrew E. that posted that as an answer to an OP on a Usenet newsgroup

This is not a product endorsement. I don't have a laptop, and no way to
actually test this device. However, I've seen external drive mounted as
internal on a Wintel laptop (my lead at FanimeCon 2009 did this). Using
something similar to this:

http://www.cooldrives.com/2ra01espccal.html

Apparently, this puts an external eSATA drive on the internal bus through
the PCMCIA adapter. No opium necessary.

I don't remember why they said you should do such a thing. Again, you're
asking me when I'm asking you.

What it's all about? Ain't about anything. I ran across it while looking
at something else and thought I'd check if anybody had any comments.

Hm. Interesting.

Thanks

Then sorry, I can't help you.

Peter Foldes commented that Andrew E. said to do it. If he's right, be
aware that Andrew E. is one of these newsgroups main trolls, and
somebody who you should always ignore. He almost never has any idea
what he's talking about, and frequently gives erroneous
information--often erroneous on purpose.

If I could remember where I read something odd you'd be able to expound on
it! That's really funny!

I don't think I saw that on a newsgroup. I was busy looking for utilities
to try on the other issues.

Knowing Andrew E., he was probably trying to say you should open up the
laptop and connect the external drive directly to the secret USB port on the
motherboard next to the PCI battery, thus rendering it an "internal" drive.

Just to be clear, where ever I read that, it was not part of a newsgroup
thread, rather it was on the internet at large somewhere. Maybe a user
comment/recommendation on some software/utility. I just can't remember
where I was when I saw it.

But it doesn't matter. I was only curious if such a thing were even
possible, let alone helpful. I know that doesn't satisfy those who freak
out in the absence of a full, scientifically worded description of issues
and problems, but that's where it's at.

I have no doubt this troll is a problem. It's too bad we aren't allowed the
Louisville Method in dealing with trolls. Next best, in my opinion, it
NEVER, EVER to reply to them. You can't match wits with the witless.

What you describe doesn't make much sense. Perhaps your recollection is
off or your interpretation is incorrect. Opium has been know to do that.
:)

Do you have a specific question about *your* laptop or external hard
drive?

Well, if you want to put it in those terms I suppose they may have said
31.6% of all ducks fly backwards! But I _have_ been taking memory pills for
3 weeks...

On the other hand I wish my memory would tell me where I saw that. I easily
get brain overload after hours looking for solutions to problems. I
remember things that stand out and that really stood out. But the source
didn't stand out.

You either misread it or misremember it. Here's one possibility:

If you need to salvage data on a laptop that cannot boot up properly,
you may remove its (internal) hard drive and place it in an external
enclosure so that you may connect it to a working PC and copy the data.
