Installing Generic text Printer

How does it work? I went through the install wizard and
installed a Generic Text Printer, but when I try to 'print
to text,' it does not go anywhere that I can find (the
document, that is).

Do I need some special generic text driver to print to
file, or am I missing something else?

Thanks

Generic Text Only is a simple printer driver intended for sending print to
very simplistic printers, such as older dot matrix type printers. It is not
a thing for sending print to a file.

To send print to a file, add a printer on the "File:" port.

1. Start the Add Printer wizard
2. click Next
3. on the "Local or Network Printer", select the Local Printer radio button;
click Next
4. the "Select a Printer Port" panel, select the "Use the following port:"
radio button and select "File: (Print to File)" from the drop down list box;
click Next
5. select whatever printer type you want the file to contain print for.

For example, if you select an HP LaserJet printer of some kind, the file
that is created when you "print" to that printer will contain HP PCL for
that printer. If you select "Generic" and "Generic / Text Only", the file
will contain plain text with a few "escape characters" (e.g. line feed,
carriage return, form feed) for controlling the printer.
