Installation of Windows 2000 Advanced Server

Brian Mutsch

I am a student and I recently ordered a copy of the free
120 day trial of Windows 2000 Advanced Server to use in
one of my classes (Win200 Server is required). My
computer at home has Windows XP installed on it and when
I try to run the setup, I get a window that says "This CD
Rom is from and older version of Windows than the one you
are currently using. Setup functionality will be
disabled." This keeps me from installing the 120 day
free trial. I would like to be able to install it where
I can choose between Windows 2000 and XP when I start my
computer. Is this possible. Please tell me what I can
do. Thanks in advance.

Brian,

You would need to partition the drive to have at least two partitions - one
for each Xp and Windows 2000 Server. You could use something like Partition
Magic to repartition the drive (if you have sufficient space to spare -
would suggest 10GB for Windows 2K test server part), but performance and
success of repartitioning may vary. I, as well of others have done it
successfully. But, you can never be sure.

Also, you would need to apply the necessary modifications to the BOOT.INI in
the Windows XP partition to indicate another selection. Not difficult, but
you have other decisions to make.

Your options currently:

* Another hard drive for the existing system, install Windows 2000 to new
drive
* Erase and partition existing drive, Applying Win XP then Win2K to second
part
* Attempt using Partition Magic (or other re-partitioning tools)
