installation failure loop

Having replaced the hard disk on my old Athlon 650 Biostar
M7 mobo with a 4-year old IBM Deskstar 30GB drive, I can't
re-install W2K. Both the mobo and the disk separately have run W2K OK in the past, but with the combination, the
setup suddenly unexpectedly re-boots at the same point
every time & I can't progress any further.

The product code is successfully entered, basic network
components are installed, and I chose 'Typical Network
Settings' and name the workgroup.

Then 'Please wait while Setup installs the components'
progresses until about 2/3rds way through. While installing Distributed Transaction Co-ordinator, the machine suddenly re-boots and goes back to the Hardware
Detection routine.

The machine does an unscheduled re-boot at the same point
again, and we loop ad nauseam.

I've tried on FAT, FAT32, and NTFS partitions, but always
the same result.

I borrowed W98SE and XP Pro install disks from my
neighbour, and both installed fine, but I don't have a
licence for XP, and anyway would like to continue with 2K
as I'm comfortable with it.

Any info about how to circumvent this installation problem
would be much appreciated.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Thanks for your suggestions, Dave, but I think a already covered that base.

I mentined partitions because to attempt install on FAT16
I needed to create a 2GB partition, but I've already tried
installing on to a freshly formatted NTFS disk with no other partitions, but got the same result. I also tried
with all the PCI cards removed.

I was just hoping there might be something like
the 'selective start-up' options in W98 in order to get past whatever file is upsetting my system - it's
interesting that it reboots, not just hangs.

Anyone else out there with pointers to KB stuff that might
help? I don't understand how one searches the KB - all these keywords starting KB are too arcane for me, I can never understand their relevance to the problem being
searched.

You didn't mention the drive controller (possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or
ATA100, or raid, or serial ATA), but you may need to boot the Windows 2000
setup disks or CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's
controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

Jan,

I have had the IDENTICAL issue. The first occurred when
installing from an enterprise version of win2k w/sp 4 CD.

I've not had this issue with previous versions. Therefor
one alternative is to install a previous version then
apply the SP.

Alternatively, at the Network options screen
select "Customize" and uncheck all three components
(Windows Client, File and Print Sharing and TCP/IP).

This resulted in a successful install of the Win2k w/SP 4.
However I've yet to complete the setup of this machine to
our production standard. We will see.

Good luck!
