Install Copy Error!! Filenames on Install disk missing ".ex_"

Please, Please HELP!

I am moving an XP Home SP2 system disk into a new box.

I didn't want to do a fresh install, because I would have to re-install all
the software.

I did a Install/Repair and everything seemed to be going fine0.

The system rebooted into the install and after a while prompted me for the
license key, which I duly entered.

Shortly after entering the key, I encountered this error message box.

+---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| Copy Error
|
|
|
| (X) Setup cannot copy file migregdb.ex_.
RETRY |
|
|
| Insure that the disk labeled 'Windows XP Home Edition CANCEL
|
| Service Pack 2 CD' is in the drive selected below, or
|
| provide the location where the file can be found.
|
|
|
| Copy files from
|
|
|
| E:\i386
BROWSE |
|

+---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

When I select the BROWSE option, I can see a file named migregdb, but without
the ".ex_" at the end of the name.

When I select RETRY, I just get the same error message.

When I select CANCEL, I get a warning that Windows may not work correctly,
and then I get another message box for another file!

The file is clearly visible when I select BROWSE, but without a filename
extension.

What is going on here?????

It's possible you are not set to view file extensions of 'known' filetypes.
Control Panel, Folder Options has a checkbox for that (View tab)
The failure to copy the file however is probably caused by a registry entry
from the old system that is looking for the setup files at the wrong drive
letter.

Your "Installation Path" can be reset.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\...

..Windows\Current Version\Setup:
Service Source Path

..Windows\Current Version\Setup:
Source Path

..WindowsNT\Current Version:
Source Path
change them to the directory with the XP Files

For Pro Edition: run GPEDIT.MSC
Local Comp. Policy/Comp. Config/Admin. Templates/System
"Specify Windows Installation file location"

Thanks, Mark.

The registry entries are pointing to the correct drive.

Almost all of the files install just fine. There are just a few that it
claims it cannot find.

The path it's looking for is E:\i386

The "E:\" is in the registry for "Service Source Path" and "Source Path"
entries.

Do I need ot add the "i386" part of the path to the registry entries?

If I do, won't that break the install for all the other files?

You can't break what's broken, so I would try it. You can always change back.
