Index Scans

I have a Minolta Scan Dual III, and I've been using it with Vuescan with
quite nice results. However, I've been looking for a way to make quick
index scans I can keep around to let me know what's on each roll, what might
be worth scanning/printing, etc. I don't normally use the scanning software
that came with the scanner, but it does have a fairly quick index scan
feature, which I've found quite useful. Unfortunately, it's not exactly got
a lot of features, and I can't see any way of saving sequential index scans,
which means I have to keep renaming the file. Also, it doesn't let me save
individual files, or select the frames to be added to the whole file (quite
a few of my negatives are cut into strips of four). Is there any better way
to make index scans with my scanner? Thanks!

Irfanview can take already scanned images and make indexes.

I'd use the Index Scan feature of Vuescan. It will save a sheet of
thumbnails in whatever arrangement you want (4x6, 6x7, etc.). There is
no need to save the actual scans unless you want a low res image for
some reason. You can name each index scan and make it match the sheets
of stored cut negatives you have. This can be printed and taped/stapled
to the neg carrier sheet. Setting the scan resolution at 353ppi or
705ppi will make the scanning go faster. I think you can scan a strip of
4-to-6 negs in a couple of minutes.
