| What's the best way to do remove the drivers in Windows XP and newer?

Good question. I've done it, but I don't remember
exactly what I did. I think I went into device manager
and removed the items under system devices, then
made a disk image so that the motherboard drivers
wouldn't get installed on reboot. I saved a note about
that as follows:

If you fail to do that and get stuck at a blue screen, reboot to a
recovery disk, such as UBCD4Win. Running Fix HDC and/or Fix IDE might solve
the problem. If not, open a remote Registry editor tool. Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\. Delete any values connected
with IDE controllers.

It's been awhile since I did this. I now keep a disk
image with generic drivers. Paul probably knows
more about this than I do. His post above might
provide more info.

I haven't found any problems with anything but
motherboard drivers.

Another option, if you're making a disk image, is
to do the full install and set everything up. For that
you'd probably want graphic drivers but don't need
anything else. MS will install generic motherboard
drivers. Other things can wait. Then make a disk
image. You might also make a second disk image
after everything is fully set up. Then you'll have a
fresh install catered to your PC and a second fresh
install ready to be put on any other PC.

I don't remember how SATA plays into this; whether
it's an issue on XP. It's been at least a couple of years
since I had to think about it. (That's why I try to save
notes to myself, or post information on my website. It
might be helpful to others *and* I know that I'll forget
everything I learned by the time I need it again. :)
