I'm thinking about buying a new DVD drive but befor i do...

I have played a DVD on the computer before. I had no
problems from the drive at all and since i don't own any
DVD's i hadn't used it for a while. But recently, i've
been getting problems that are out of the ordinary. I've
performed every step in the DVD trouble shooter and I
still haven't had any luck in playing DVD's. It's gotten
so bad that at times the DVD drive doesn't even recognize
that a DVD is present. This computer was purchased and
has been operating for just over a year. I've trusted the
quality of compaq for years now and I can honestly say
that I've never encountered a problem like this.I've used
every tactic available from my intermediate computer
knowledge to rid myself of this problem but I can't find
any solution. Please help me to solve this problem. - Dan

What software do you have? Have you tried reinstalling
it? Does the computer recognise the dvd drive?

You haven't given enough information for anyone to tell you what
the problem is. What:
1. Operating system?
2. DVD software player do you use?
3. Error message do you receive?
4. Compaq model#?

5. Ever try a motherboard or DVD BIOS upgrade?

I use Windows 98(1) and PowerDVD ~3.0.1000. My system is 2 years
old.
