IF formula for currency or Macro help.

I have column A with amounts in various currencies (USD, Euro and British Pounds) and I am looking to create some type of formula that recognizes the currency in column A and provides me with the conversion in USD in column B.

i.e. =IF (a1, formatted in ___, A1*the conversion rate...)

I don't know if this can be done with an IF formula but any ideas are welcome.
