I have been having on going issues with error messages:
I continually receive the message regarding 0x71ab6b17 referenced memory at 07x71ab6b17 this memory could not be written.

I have been able to use automatic updates at microsoft.com/windowsupdate/ for quite some time.

Most recently while the "Checking for updates for your computer..." screen runs continuously
I received a new Application Error
IEXPLOR.EXE
The instruction at "07x71ab6afc referenced memory at 07x71ab6afc" This memory could not be "written"

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

Without double checking i'm fairly certain that iexplor.exe (no E on the end) is a virus of some kind.

Is it Iexplore.exe or iexplor.exe, you need to be sure. :)

I took some corrective action regarding the inability to use windows update I did the following:
Try to re-register the Windows Update files...

Click Start, click Run, type notepad in the Open box, and then click OK.
Paste the following commands into the new Notepad document:
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUCLTUX.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUWEBV.DLL /S
REGSVR32 JSCRIPT.DLL /S
REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL /S
On the File menu, click Save As.
In the Save in box, click Desktop.
In the Save as type box, click All Files.
In the File name box, type Register.bat.
Click Save.
On the File menu, click Exit to exit Notepad.
On your desktop, double-click the Register.bat file to register the Windows Update files.
Try to install the updates again.

I am trying to install the updates now.

Ok I went for the reset, we'll see how things go from here. Thank you very much for the direction..
While we are at it I was previously receiving another error message regarding the system32\dumprep 0-k which causes a pop up every time I start my computer up, hopefully this will resolve this error as well.

OK so here is the latest issue.

I am now getting an error message:

The instruction at 0x71ab6b17 referenced memory at 0x71ab6b17 could not be written
The instruction at 0x71ab6aa8 referenced memory at 0x71ab6aa8 could not be written.

Any thoughts on these two?
I am running Windows XP by the way

ok, I have no confidence in either, however, the MS FixIt such as ...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

... which should, if we is lucky, help with the wups2.dll error

It does seem as tho you got a 'hiccup' somewhere down the road.

I must admit I fell into the old trap of mistaking iexplorer with internet explorer, while they do share the same code, they are different.

dunno if MS's 'sfc' would help ...

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...ddocs/en-us/system_file_checker.mspx?mfr=true

... will need an original XP CD

Ok I have more or less resolved a number of the issues, I reloaded XP with the original CD.
By the way I am using a Dell Inspiron Laptop.
It would appear that some of my hardware is not being recognized.
I am unable to connect to the internet, any suggestions?

Slowly but surely, I am now able to see the devices in the device manager.
I am working on the help and support service now, which isn't working either.
Thanks again.

Device manager issue is fixed.
Wireless modem is not functioning at all.
The computer came with an Intel modem, but also has a conextant modem which is the preferred modem neither appear to be "showing up" drivers have been updated and show enabled in the Device Manager. No luck.
