IE8, then black menues and toolbars!

A

Greeting from France.
Just after I installed IE8, I found that both the menus and the toolbars had
turned to black, with icons remaining visible here and there.
Here is what it looks like: http://cjoint.com/?fkaPgaiHz6
I managed to uninstall and get back to IE7, and the problem disappeared.
So far I haven't found much explanation on the internet, except these:
1. "It's known to happen for very few users with IE8 right after installation."
2. If I chose either "XP" or "classic" *raw* themes, the problem disappears--but
if I ever so slightly alter any setting, the problem is back.
Someone mentioned going through alt+shift+printscreen, but this is slow and
complicated, and hell! this is supposed to be the 21st century where a computer
should not demand any special wizardry, right?
So if anyone would have read anything about this, I'd sure be glad to read them.
Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem a few days ago.

Select Start, Control Panel, Display, Appearance, Advanced, Click on the
Scoll to the right of the item box and change the selection to Menu.
Change the colour from Black to a light colour of your choosing and
click on OK.

Bon chance.

Hope this helps.

I did work while the session was on... but it was lost after the first reboot.
Thanks anyway.
Bon chance.

Merci.

I think I know why the seting did not stick.

Select Start, Control Panel, Display, Appearance, Advanced, Click on the
Scoll to the right of the item box and change the selection to Menu.
Change the colour from Black to a light colour of your choosing and
click on OK.

Next click on Apply and OK. The Apply is imporant.

The problem is different to the one KB Article 962963 addresses. Please
read the earlier part of the thread. The problem is essentially one of
the Menu Bar background being changed to Black with the result that
black text cannot be read. The reason for the change is not known. Also
I do not know whether it is likely to happen again. The background can
be changed back to a light colour. However, not all users will readily
appreciate how to correct the problem. I have described the solution
earlier. Your Internet Explorer Outreach Team could usefully investigate
why this unwelcome change occurs and remedy what is almost certainly a
bug.

Especially as the problem is *nooot* corrected that way either.

Unfortunately your solution doesn't work on my system.

Pas chiche !

I went through the whole process again--starting with reinstalling IE8, as I
can't keep it as it is--and guess what: after reboot, the same mess again.
Now I must leave--got an IE8 to uninstall for the nth time.
Thanks for trying (again) anyway.

Boy! this sure:
1. is the first time I get to talk with someone who is however loosely connected
with Microsoft--but I guess you won't want to read what I have to write about
Microsoft ever since I've been using it (win 3.11!), so let's skip that one;
2. isn't the first time I get an answer from someone who never even cared to
read the question. Microsoft all right?

(...) The Apply is imporant.

In case this may help here are picture of the different steps:
1. what I get after I install IE8:
http://cjoint.com/?fywZYKk6tT
2. what I get after I apply your solution:
http://cjoint.com/?fyw0JFBr2K
(as you can see, it is not quite right yet: I have to close IE and relaunch it)
3. what I finally get to get:
http://cjoint.com/?fyw06kT1Aq
....until I reboot, that is.
What is driving me kinda mad at the moment is that even Firefox is being a
you-know-what in the you-know-where, and no-one seems to be able to get me outta
there either. I just want software that works without being a nuisance every
other time--maybe some time in the XXIInd century?

That is strange. The fix has stuck here.

I had another odd thing happen. My Desktop Wallpaper changed from Bliss
to Internet Explorer Wallpaper. I had to change that back to Bliss. So
far that fix has stuck. However, both changes were odd.

Reverting to your problem what are your anti-virus, anti-spyware and
firewall arrangements?

AVG 8.5 Free - none resident (I launch one once in a while) - let me know and
decide.
You know, one thing I could use would be a way to automatically correct the
setting you mentioned (as it does work while the session is on), but how could
that be achieved...?
Note: for some unknown, mysterious reason (*), the setting *had* actually stuck
when I started the machine this morning, but I chose to refrain from writing I
love you, and I'm glad I did because I rebooted in the morning and off the
setting had gone.
(*) I wish I could write "Microsoft knows why!"... >:-(
