ICS works with static IP client but not DHCP client

Hi there. Wondering if anyone has encountered this and may be able to shed
some light. I have a simple home network: a desktop "host" machine running
ICS connected to a broadband modem and also to a Netgear wireless access
point. I also have a laptop "client" machine that connects wirelessly to the
AP.

I set up ICS on the host machine using all the default settings, and then on
the client machine I've configured the wireless adapter with an IP address of
192.168.0.2 and a gateway/DNS server of 192.168.0.1 . Eerything works
beautifully -- the client can share files with the host, and they both access
the internet.

If I try to switch the client to "DHCP mode" however, it all falls apart. I
set the wireless adapter to "Automatically obtain an IP address" and poof, no
file sharing and no internet access on the client. Client can't obtain an IP
address via DNS ... it just appears as 0.0.0.0. It seems like ICS on the
host machine is just not giving out IP addresses.

Both the machines have WinXP Pro on them. The DT machine is SP2, and the
notebook machine has whatever combination of patches my office has put on
there plus it's on the work domain. Incidentally, I've also tried
eliminating the Wireless AP from the setup and just used plain wires, and the
same thing happens.

Anyone have any ideas of what could be going on? I really want to get DHCP
to work because it's a pain to have to reconfigure my IP settings every day
when I come home from work. I should really just go buy a router (I've
wasted WAY too much of my time already), but I have too much pride to give up
in defeat.

Give up in defeat. Buy the router. Seriously. When ICS works it works
great but when you run into a problem the router is cheap compared to the
time it would take you to find the problem.

Are there any relevant messages in Event Viewer on the host computer?
To run it, click Start | Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance |
Administrative Tools | Event Viewer. For more information, see:

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=308427

If you can't get DHCP to work, you can specify the static values as
the alternate TCP/IP configuration for its network adapter. At work,
where there's a DHCP server, it will use DHCP. At home, where the
DHCP server doesn't work, it will use the static values.

Thanks for you response Steve! pProblem is, I've already tried those
things. There don't seem to be any relevant messages in the event viewer.
If I try to configure my client IP settings such that DCHP is enabled in the
primary configuration and then the alternate configuration is a static IP
address, then when I connect it to the ICS host, the alternate configuration
isn't activated. The client still tries to get an IP address, fails (0.0.0.0
is listed) but doesn't switch to the alternate configuration.

Maybe this tells you something ... any ideas of what could be happening?
