how to UPGRADE to win xp home edition from win 98 using a FULL win xp home edition cd

E

ER

From an entry I previously saw in a different news group the following
was stated:
You can upgrade from a full version disk or install a full version
from an upgrade disk. The only difference is a check built into the
setup program that looks for the older version. The CAB files are
exactly the same and the rest of the functionality is the same.

I agree with this statement, at least in theory, but of course this is
made difficult with all the different mumbo jumbo version of CDs that
allow this but don't allow that making it hard to do the simplest of
things that you really should be able to do with out having to buy 10
CDs when one, particularly the full should do it all!

Does anybody ou there have the exact process for doing these 2 things
(would really appreciate it). As an example: I noticed in my seperate
FULL WIN XP PRO edition I have the installation pull down menu options
to "upgrade" or "new installation" unfortunately my FULL home home
edition CD does not provide you with this "upgrade option only the new
installation option, and at this point I really just wanted to upgrade
to WIN XP home edition from one of my win 98 version machines.

Thanks to all in advance!

Is your "full" XP Home retail or OEM? (An OEM copy may have OEM in the
product key.)

I have read that OEM versions don't permit upgrade installations.

Good luck.

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

You really really don't want to install xp OVER 98.. trust me.. it may take a
little longer to back stuff up, but do a full clean install, you'll thank the
god of microsoft later on..

XP upgrades work very well when properly done. The OP probably has a OEM
version and doesn't have a choice to upgrade. OEM versions can only do clean
installs.

Key word : when..

in a perfect world we would never have needed any new windows versions.. ver 3
would have done just as well as xp.. grin.. why let "when" in the door when you
can guarantee a clean upgrade?

A clean install guarantees nothing and in some instances it is impossible to
even get the system to work at all with a clean install. The XP upgrade
backs up the settings and data, deletes the old Windows and then installs a
clean Windows and finally restores the settings data to the clean install.
I always suggest the user prepares for a clean install but goes with the
upgrade as a first option. In the rare occasion it is not a success, they
are prepped for the clean install so all that is lost is the time it took to
run the upgrade.
BTW "When" still gets in the door if the user doesn't properly prep for the
clean install.
