How To Run Access97 Side By Side with Access 2003

Myoffice uses Access 97 and for sme reason refuses to upgrade to the latest
version. I have Office professional and would like to do some work on my DBs
at home. I would like to be able to run 97 and 2003 seperately on the same
computer. Is this possible? How do I do it?

Just install to a different folder. It is often recommended that multiple
versions be installed in version order, but others report no problems when not
adhering to that.

You will find that the last version you open will take over file associations
for Access files. Just get in the habit of opening the desired version and then
opening files from within instead of double-clicking on files and there are few
problems.

In additional to Rick's correct advice, most of the information in
http://www.trigeminal.com/usenet/usenet019.asp applies to Access 97/Access
2003 as well.

An important piece of advice is to look in folder where Access 97 is
installed and find the files MSACCESS.SRG and WIZARD.SRG. Make copies of
those two files, then go into the original files and delete the content.
(Don't delete the files, as Access will have problems if they don't exist).
This will help reduce some of the issues with the most recent version of
Access always reregistering.

I prefer to install them in version order, into different directories,
preferrrably on different virtual drives. It makes it easier to distingush
which files goe where. There is only 1 problem that you need to be aware of.
Access 97 will silently register (or re-register) itself every time it is
run. That means the next time you start a file, it will automatically try to
start in Access 97. To avoid this, find the file named msaccess.srg in the
same folder as the executable, then rename it to msaccess_srg.old or
something like it. Open a new empty notepad text file and rename it to
msaccess.srg.

To make it easier to open the right file in the right version, put a
shortcut to each executable in your SendTo folder, then just right-click on
an mdb and send it to the correct version.
