How to remove left over file that system won't let me delete????

hi

I have a winxp Home system, a lot of stuff got corrupted with a virus
of some kind, and I've been removing and reinstalling programs..

I decided to replace Grisoft's AVG program, but the Add/Remove
wouldn't do it cause it couldn't find the files it needed, so I just
went into WExplorer and deleted all except "avgse.dll" It cannot be
deleted, this is identified as a "shell extension module", and I've
deleted all other files in the Grisoft folder, but windows XP will not
let me remove this one.

I have installed Norton's but how do I get rid of this last file??

thanks,

I thought of that after I posted, but can't figure out how to boot to
safe mode, tried F8 on bootup, but it still booted up normally... if
you'd tell me how to get to safe mode, I'll be happy to try it...

thanks,
