tried the first part earlier today, failed again after 4 hours.
is this something that comcast could be causing from their end.

unplugging modem waiting 10 seconds plugging it back in it works again for a while.

You could try this fix but I suspect that it is not the problem as everyone
using Comcast with Vista would be experiencing it.

I suspect a buggy NIC driver. See if you can find a newer NIC driver. I
highly recommend you not connect directly to the modem in any case. You
should be using a router. This will probably fix the problem.

As a general rule of thumb I don't get hardware updates from Microsoft. With
Vista sometimes it's worth a try. With XP it was generally a disaster. My
recommendation is if it continues working leave well enough alone :)
