How restore DLL Cache?

J

***Jamoke***

I tried to run System File Checker from a command prompt as I usually do.
However, this time, it kept asking me for my original CD. Finally, the
process finished. I rebooted and tried again without the CD - but it kept
asking me for it. Windows HELP says to run sfc /scannow to restore the DLL
Cache (dllcache) - but that's whay I did. There must ne another way to
restore that file.

SFC needs that CD in order to replace corrupt system files on your hard drive.

Yes, I know. So I ran sfc /scannow with the CD in the drive. Every so
often, the process stopped while the CD drive started up. It grabbed the
file from my CD - then continued on. My Dllcache folder must be corrupt.
In any case, I want to be able to run sfc without the CD by fixing the
problem. How do I do this?

It would seem that SFC is restoring *several* files from the CD.

Are you saying that, now, *every* time you run "sfc /scannow", the process stops, and the CD drive starts up, etc...?

If so, you may need to do a System Restore back to a date before this started occurring.

If that does not help, then you may need to reinstal Windows.

Yes, that's what's happening. I'm running a virus check right now. System
Restore doesn't work at all. However, I have backups (including the
Registry and Documents and Settings) going back a couple of weeks.

Perhaps the folder Dllcache is corrupted?

If System Restore does not work, and your virus scanner is unable to fix the problems, and your backups do not help, then you may
need to reinstal Windows.

It is possible that you have a hardware problem that caused all of this.

As for your Dllcache folder allegedly being corrupt, if your system were not unwell, then I would expect that SFC would have been
able to correct that. Your unwell system might not be able to heal itself, which is why you may need to reinstal Windows.

Having said that, somebody else might know of a less drastic solution which will resolve the problem.

Hi,

Perhaps he can turn off WFP, then flush the WFP cache, then turn it
back on and repopulate it with the sfc /scannow command. Try sfc
/purgecache, then sfc /scannow. That should fix the corrupted dllcache
folder. For more thorough checking/fixing, run chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r
if in the recovery console first before running the sfc /purgecache,
sfc /scannow options.
