How do I switch off the Quote to special characters funciton?

When working in word, If I wish to type "Opera.... I have to press the
following keys.
", space, O, P etc. if I dont press the space the following is displyed
öpera.
How do I switch off this automatic conversion? I have switched off the
straight to curly quotes function and this has not helped.
Any clues?

You have enabled an international keyboard layout. Change this in Windows
Control Panel | Keyboard.
