how do I save Word 2003 document as Word for Mac X document?

I need to convert a Word 2003 document containing Tables and embedded
pictures to a Word for Macintosh X document. How is this done? Don't see
appropriate conversion filter for this. Colleagues tell me that images within
Tables will be distorted when opened by Mac software

You might try asking in a MacWord NG, but I don't think this should be a
problem; Windows and Mac versions of Word are supposed to be
interchangeable.

Word has used the same file format since Word 97, and cross-platform
compatibility is increasing all the time. There is no way to save one as
another, and no conversion filter, as they are the same format. You might
need to use different types of graphics, but as I am not sure, I am linking
this thread to the MacWord group, and hopefully Mac experts will chime in.
Often it's easier to solve a problem of this type after sending the document
and seeing what happens. However, many people have been exchanging documents
between Win and MacWord for years with no problems. I am not sure whether
images within tables present a special case.
