How do I open a read only file with Powerpoint 2000

I have been sent a file that is password protected but have been told that I
can open it as read only. I have Powerpoint 2000, I'm not sure exactly which
version the file was created with. When trying to open a file I get the
message "Powerpoint can't open the type of file represented by D:....". I
have no problem reading or creating any other Powerpoint files.

If the file is password protected. It's most probably from a newer version of powerpoint.

Tell the person who sent you the file that files password protected in
PowerPoint 2002 or 2003 cannot be opened in PowerPoint 2000 or 97. Yes, in
PowerPoint 2002 or 2003 they can be opened as Read Only if you don't have the
password, but in earlier versons they cannot be opened at all.

you could download the 2003 viewer and see it..maybe depends on password
setting?
