I own a Dell laptop and am curious as to how I turn it off manually to save

What is wrong with clicking "Start" button then Turn Off Computer" ???

If you want ot use the power button, then go into "Control Panel",
Click on "Performance and Maintenance" then click on "Power Options".

Click on "Advanced" tab and look near the bottom for:-

When I press the power button.... "

Here you can select options to do when you press the power button,
such as:-

Do nothing
Ask me what to do
Stand by
Shut Down

"Ask me what to do" is safest. With this selected, when you press the
power button you get the options:-

Stand by Turn Off Restart

You can either set your monitor to go off after a few minutes via
Control Panel > Power Options

or use a third party tool.

When you try to shut it off it automatically reverts to the battery. So
you can remove the battery and usr regular power until you need to use
the battery.
