How do I Make an existing Windows 2000 Server into a domain controller in a NT 4 network

Stan

Hi,

I have a group of NT 4 servers and one Windows 2000 file server, due to the
age of the PDC NT4 Server I want to make the Windows 2000 server into the
new PDC, currently there are no BDC's in this network. Any suggestions as
to the best way of doing this.

Thanks

Stan

To upgrade NT PDC to 2000 on new hardware:

Perform a clean installation of Windows NT 4.0 and service pack 6a as a BDC.
· Press START > PROGRAMS > ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS > SERVER MANAGER
· Highlight the current computer name in the list and select "computer" from
the
menu above it
· Select "Promote to Primary Domain Controller"
· The original PDC will automatically be demoted to a BDC but all
applications
currently mapped to it will continue to function as normal
· Install third party applications to the new system
· Gracefully shut down the original PDC (now a BDC)
· Un-plug the NIC CARD on this system after shutdown
· On the new system go back into SERVER MANAGER and highlight the name of
the
server you just un-plugged select COMPUTER from the menu and select "Remove
From
Domain".
· Rename the New system as per Q150298 - Renaming a Windows NT PDC or BDC
located
at <http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q150/2/98.asp> .

By following the above recommendations, you will be able to create an
installation
of NT 4.0 which will successfully interoperate with the new hardware
configuration
and ultimately not need a succession of fixes and troubleshooting.
