How do I get rid of "Default Paragraph Font" in my document?

Word 2003
My document has suddenly been riddled with most styles defined as "Default
Paragraph Font". No matter how I attempt to change the style to something
more meaningful like "Normal" nothing changes.
Any suggestions why this may have happened and how to correct it?

I have realised that the "Default Paragraph Font Char Char Char Char" (that
is the full name...) only appears whenever I use AutoCorrect. As soon as I
hit enter the DPF appears throughout the document. How do you stop it
appearing?

I have noticed that the "Default Paragraph Font Char Char Char Char" (that is
the full name) appears when I use the AutoCorrect. As soon as I hit Enter the
DPF is created and applied throughout the document. The annoying bit is that
the English (U.S.) spelling is applied along with a different spacing. How do
I avoid this happening?
