hourglass flashes

I've had a problem with the computer locking up and I had
the blaster worm. I've been able to remove the worm and
seem to have ended the lockup problem but the hourglass
almost always flashes on and off about every 2 or 3
seconds next to the pointer when it is just sitting there
and I'm doing nothing. I think some program is causing it
but I don't have a clue! Running XP Professional on a 700
mhz Compaq. Also I have 256 RAM.

Hi Mark,

Run both edits on line 157

Other than that:

Run the Task Manager, go to View/Select Columns, and turn on the following
columns: "I/O Read Bytes" and "I/O Write Bytes." This will give you details
as to which process is accessing the disk.

Although many processes will be accessing the disk a lot, look for one with
a high total or a fast rate of increase, especially when you hear the drive
being accessed.
