Hotfix KB810243 listing can't be removed via Add or Remove Programs

Once I see that hotfixes aren't going to cause problems, I usually delete the
uninstall files from C:\WINDOWS and then click on the "Remove" button for each
in Add or Remove Programs to get rid of the listings.

I recently had a problem that called for a repair install of XP. Of course,
many of the hotfixes had to be installed again once I did that. I deleted all
the hotfix uninstall files as usual, but when I tried to get rid of the Add or
Remove listing for KB810243, I found it has no Remove button.

I can get rid of the listing in the Registry, but was wondering why there's no
Remove button, which keeps this one from being removed the usual way. I'm sure
that particular hotfix was removed at some point before the repair install was
needed because I didn't have any hotfixes showing in Add or Remove Programs
then.

If KB810243 doesn't have a Remove button because it's one of those hotfixes that
can't be removed, why did it appear in the Add or Remove list at all?

Any ideas?

TIA!

According to KB article 810243, this file is
uninstallable, and the date on the article is fairly
recent (11/7/2003)

My guess as to the reason it shows in Add/Remove is so
you're aware of what hotfixes are loaded, and/or the fact
that it's an installed "program" if you will.

While your method of removing the uninstall files before
the listings means things should work, are you double-
checking that after you hit remove in ARP that you still
have the hotfixed files?

www.dougknox.com has and excellent little utility that removes the hotfix entries from the add\remove program list as well as the backups. This tool just removes the entries not the fix. Have fun.

Thanks for that. It worked like a charm and kept me from having to get into the
Registry. :)

When I choose "Remove" in Add or Remove Programs after deleting a hotfix
uninstall file, a message pops up saying that the uninstall file can't be found
and asking if I want to delete the entry. Once the uninstall file is deleted
from C:\WINDOWS, there's no longer a mechanism for automatically removing or
replacing the hotfix files. That would have to be done manually.

The Unknown P led me to a much better method, though. It's a file called
XP_Remove_Hotfix_Backup.exe under Win XP Utilities at http://www.dougknox.com/.
That got rid of the pointless listing very nicely.
