Hitachi 200GB HD Making very strange noises.

My Dad and I bought identical Hitachi 200GB HDs four months ago, and
mine periodically makes a strange 1 to 2 second noise that sounds sort
of like a baby's cry. It's pretty loud. It happens about every
fifteen minutes or so. The weird thing is that my Dad's HD didn't
make that noise... until last week.

Should I be worried?

I had a 120GB Deskstar that started making the whining/groaning noise just
as you described. I RMA'd it with just about a month left on the warranty.
The replacement drive made the same noise. No problems other than the noise
but I decided not to chance it. Replaced it with a Samsung and it's very
quiet.

Thanks. So did you eat the cost of the IBM/Hitachi drive, or
return.exchange it?

Just wrote it off. See if the place you bought them will work with you on an
exchange. If not, remember Hitachi won't cross-ship a replacement. You have
to send yours in first. Just another good reason to buy one from somebody
else.
