Hijackthis - do you need administrator rights to run it?

I converted my main sign in name to the "power users" group in Windows
2000 Pro (it was previously in the adminsitrator group).

When I run Hijackthis, I get a message that my system denied write access
to the HOSTS file.

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modMain_CheckOther1Item ()
Error #75 - Path/File access error

Please email me at (e-mail address removed), reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible


This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

The program then closes. When I choose to run the program as
"administrator" using right mouse click/shift key, the program runs with
no problem.

I reloaded a clean version of Hijackthis 1.99.1 from merijn.org and still
can't run it as a power user.


I also have IE-Spyad and the MVPS HOSTS file installed.

I did a google search on the above error, and there are many hits, but I
don't see the administrator issue addressed.

You need at the very least debug rights but yes give yourself admin rights
and don't use the mvps host file.

Log on as Administrator and grant write access to the
/Windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts file for the "power user" account.

How do you give yourself debug rights? And why shouldn't I use the
host file you mention?
