High CPU usage in services.exe and high Page file size

Guest

I got a seriouse problem with my Windows xp pro. when I start windows, the
system will go very very slowly, and will report the page file size is too
small the system will increase the pagefile size. I check the task manager,
found that the process of services.exe use high CPU usage almost 90%, and
many page faults in this process. at this time, the pagefile size is up to
2G, so the system runs very very slowly. If I start windows in safe mode, it
seems everything is ok. If I start windows with diagnostic startup(just load
basic device and service only), it will occour this problem. and if I start
windows with selective startup and select process SYSTEM.INI and process
WIN.ini file(the system services and startup item are not selected), problem
will occour.
So how can I solve this problem? Thank you very much.

What are your pagefile settings? Start, Control Panel, System, Advanced,
Performance -Advanced, Virtual Memory, Change.

Have you installed any "memory boosters"? If yes remove them.

In Task Manager select the Process tab and click on View, Select Column and
ensure that Memory Usage, Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size are
checked.

What is the Image name of the Process that is recording high CPU usage?

What measures have you taken to protect your machine from spyware? What
firewall is in place?

Hope this helps.

1.I change the pagefile setting to systetm setting.
2.I didn't installed any memory boosters software before.
2.in task manager I can see that services.exe use high virtual memory and
high peak memory than othyer process. for example, the virtual memory size up
to 2,000,000k. I suspected this is caused by physical memory, then I change
some new memory but still the problem.
3.I use task manager to monitor the cup usage. the process is services.exe
use high cpu and memory when the windows xp starting. after 15 min the cpu
usage and memory usage will drop slowly. during that time the system is
extremly slow.
4.before I used ms antispyware sofware and spybot and turn on windows
firewall. I am sure there are not virus on my computer, because I use
antivirus software and scan the system regularly.
Thank you for your help, hope you can give me some ideas to solve my
problem. because I really don't want reinstall my system for the special
reason.

Task Manager is useful but you could look at another freeware utility
Process Explorer, which provides similar information but adds that
little bit extra towards seeing what the running processes represent.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the
svchost producing the high CPU usage, right click,
select Properties, Services. Note there are the full names and some
explanation of what each service does.

You will find further information on Services here:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each
service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on CPU
usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services are
dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies tab allow
it a little time to display the information.

A virus may not be the problem. However, there are other types of malware
( including spyware ) which can cause this type of problem. They can be
difficult to detect.

Install and run HijackThis:
Download HijackThis (Freeware)
http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/

Finally run HijackThis and post the HijackThis log to the HijackThis
forum here:
http://aumha.net/

You will need to register with Aumha to be able to post.

Another information I forgot to let you know that I removed this harddisk and
connect it to other computer to make a disk defragment, first I watched many
fragments on the C: drive(system dirve), then the defragment cannot complete
because it reported that there some files and folders are not be move.
Is this cause the pagefile problem?
how can I do a completely disk defragment on my c: drive?

thanks again!

The amount of free space is very important when running Disk Defragmenter. A
minimum of 15% is required but sometimes 20% is desirable if the drive /
partition
contains one or more large files. You can run Disk Defragmenter a second and
third
time if files are still fragmented after the first run. You can put files
more prone to
fragment in their own partitions.

If you use Outlook Express regularly compacting Outlook Express before
running
Disk Defragmenter is helpful.

Disk Defragmenter provides a "Most fragmented files" list. When a fragmented
file is
larger than the largest pocket of free space available then the files is not
fragmented.
Running Disk Defragmenter a second or third time does move files around and
can
reduce / eliminate the contents of the "Most fragmented files" list. The
more free
space on the drive / partition, the more likely it is that all fragments
will be
eliminated.

Free space cannot be defragmented with the Windows XP Disk Defragmenter.
Neither can your pagefile be defragmented because the file is in use whilst
Disk Defragmenter is running. You can purchase other Defragmenting Utilities
e.g.
Perfect Disk, which will defragment your pagefile and free space. Another
option is to
place your pagefile in it's own partition. A pagefile partition is best
located as the first
partition on a second hard drive. You should leave a small page file at the
original
location.
