Go to Control panel and click on the Folder Option icon. In the folder
options properties window click the View tab. Look down the list until you
come to the section marked 'hidden files and folders' Check to see if the
'do not show hidden files and folders' or the 'show hidden files and
folders' option is enabled. There should be a 'dot' within the circle on the
left of the option to say which is enabled. If the 'show hidden files and
folders' option is enabled simply click on the 'radio button' next to 'do
not show hidden files and folders' to enable this option instead. Next
click the 'Apply' button followed by OK. Any hidden files should now
disappear.
You might also like to scroll down the list a little further (2 lines) and
check to see that there is a tick mark in the 'hide protected operating
system files (recommended) option. Again if there is no tick next to the
option click the box with your mouse to place a tick in the box.
By default the hide protected operating system files is enabled, but if you
have been messing around with he folder options you may have disabled the
option, in which case operating system files will become visible. These may
be the files visible on your desktop. If they are not then perhaps you could
let us know what the file names are?

There should be. Alternatively open Windows explorer and click on the Tools
option on the main toolbar. From the drop down menu select Folder option

You have downloaded an application from the internet that has put those
icons on the desktop. Although you should be able to delete them. Can you
remember what you have downloaded recently (how long have they been there?).
You might be able to do a system restore to clear them. if you do a system
restore then be sure to recheck the folder options again.
many people don't realise that many applications, particularly freeware, can
add other links to your desktop. I only recently downloaded the smiley
central software only to find that it has a hidden Trojan. So don't download
it!
