HELP: XP SP2: USB Printer won't detect/install

Hi.

I have been battling with this problem for over a week now.

Without going into the details I have a simple question: what are the
reasons that a USB device would not be detected (in XP SP2) when it is
plugged in for the first time?

Given:

a.) All other USB devices work fine;
b.) There are no errors in Device Manager;
c.) A sfc /scannow gives no indication of any corrupt files;
d.) The printer works fine on an older machine (Win 98 ME);

One further bit of information:

There is a known problem with this printer (Canon MPC200) when
upgrading from Windows XP to XP SP2 - the printer is unable to
communicate with the computer (I wonder!) A patch exists but can only
be applied when the original drivers have already been installed. I
cannot do this (please just trust me).

A forced install fails as I am unable to choose the (virtual) USB
printer port as an option - when I try to install the USB drivers on a
different port (LPT1) I get the "The specified location does not
contain information about your hardware." dialog. The same is true if I
try installing the drivers using "Windows Update".

[If I right-click the actual .inf file (on the CD) and choose "install"
then there are no errors, but the drivers do not appear to install
either.]

I appear to have both USBMON.DLL and USBPRINT.SYS, though the latter
only appears as part of a .CAB file. Does this need to be extracted and
installed anywhere? Should I get a later version?

I am stuck for ideas. I am confident that if I can get the USB001 port
to show as an option then things can progress.

Any help is gratefully received.

Thanks,

Steve.

Generally PRINTERs require that their software be installed prior to
connecting the device to your USB port.

To do therwise will guarantee problems.

You can attempt to unistall any Canon Software by 'Add Remove' Programmes.
Reboot the PC and delete any folders that may still remain due to poorly
written uninstallation routine.

You can also run REGEDIT.EXE and look for any references to Canon and delete
all of them.

Reboot the PC and then follow the installation instructions 'to the letter'.

Is it plugged into a hub or directly into a USB port?? Printers cannot be
plugged into hubs. Have no idea what your are talking about re: USB drivers.
They are standard in XP no drivers needed. USB 2.0 supported in release 2.
Are other USB devices responding?? Is USB turned on in the MB?? Too many
unknowns!!!

Not quite true Kenneth.

Some printers want to be installed only in the first USB port on a PC and
will not function in any other port at all [had this with a Lexmark 3-in-One].

Some prinbters can go anywhere, even a hub.

Most Inkjets are very fussy and need the 'installation' software to run
before they can be used properly.

It's always best to follow the makers advice on this.

Hi.

Thanks for your response. In turn:

1.) Plugged in directly (tried all 5 USB ports);
2.) (it was late when I posted) For "USB drivers" read "USB printer
drivers" (the key emphasis is on USB - there are non-USB drivers also
included on the CD, but no parallel port so...);
3.) All other USB devices respond fine;
4.) MB (motherboard)? Yes, must be (see (3.))

I hope this helps.

Thanks.

Steve.

Hi.

Thanks for the advice.

This particular printer also requires that the software be installed
prior to connection. However, very early on in the install it requests
that the printer be connected and that the user wait for the "found new
hardware" message to appear (after it is detected). This message does
not appear for me.

"to do otherwise will guarantee problems". Can this include not
detecting the printer at all?!

I have already removed all Canon software through Add/Remove Programs
and removed any folders.

The only thing I haven't tried is the registry, though I have scanned
it and I did notice that there _are_ references to the Canon print
processor (CNMPDy8.dll) under CurrentControlSet_XX.

Could this be the old installation hiding?

Thanks.

Steve.
