Help replacing corrupted file please

Hello all,
Everyone out there I am sure has had their patience tested with Vista as I
have.
I have previously been through the Microsoft support hoops to end up at the
you will need to reinstall due to corrupted files.
Here i am again a few weeks on, after doing just that and all the driver
updates thereafter and I really do not want to have to do that again.
The problem I now face is that on logging on I am getting the message that
C:Windows\system32\ODBC32.DLL is corrupt.
Unfortunately this used by not only my creative soundcard but also the
microsoft management console, which means event viewer, device manager etc is
not accesable.
sfc scannow also will not sort it.
I am running vista 32 bit with intel matrix storage manager with a recovery
raid drive.
I am hoping that it is possible to access the above file on the recovery
drive and replace the corrupted file. i am shooting in the dark as I have no
experience of working with a raid drive as this is a new computer.
I would really appreciate any advice that will save me from going back to
factory settings again
Hope some one can help,
Regards,
Paul

Open a command prompt window with admin rights and run System
File Checker. If the DLL is corrupt that should replace it for you.
Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command Prompt
Right click and select Run as, select Administrator.

Type in sfc /scannow

Have your Windows disk ready as you may need it.

All the best,
SG

Thanks for the reply.
I have tried that and gets to 29 percent through and will not complete scan.
Ran sfc/scanfile and says problems cannot fix. I am therefore beyond my
knowledge and hope someone can advise of a repair without a complete
reinstall.
Have oem disc.

Yep, puts you off phoning when the person you are talking to in india is as
confused as you. We all know a reinstall will work but they are not the
people having to reload all those drivers and fixes which vista seems to need
to limp on.
anyone any ideas out there?

Paul

I feel your frustration. Several months ago, I had an activation
problem. Some 3 hours later, Microsoft support told me to backup,
format, and re-install! I hate that. It's sort of like curing the
desease by killing the patient.

It's strange that ODBC32.DLL (Open Database Connectivity) is used by
your soundcard. Perhaps if you re-install the drivers there it may help,
if they are related...

I know you are not going to like this, but here is the answer from a
topnotch Microsoft employee

Hello John,
There is a separate copy of the what are considered the boot critical files
that can be repaired with SFC while offline.
These are in the \windows\winsxs\backup, but the number of files there are
limited.

Mounting the wim file from the DVD and manually copying the files from the
mounted location to the OS location is the only way to replace a corrupted
file that cannot be repaired with SFC.
Thanks,

That was a reply from Darrell. The closest I have come to trying anything
is to find this article.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/events/vista/dsk-02.mspx The
second item would seem to apply.
This will give you info as to how to do it.

Thanks for the reply John.
Looked at the link but couldn,t find any info relevant.
I am not a programmer and still learning the ropes with Vista.
Hope you or someone else can take me through step by step what to do.
the file is accessable on the raid recovery drive though again it is a new
computer and have never worked with raid before and am unclear if this will
be corrupt to!
Hope you can help,
Kind Regards,

Paul
