Help: Endless loop - "Not enough virtual memory"

R

Rob Sperberg

Upgrading from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP
Professional. Install goes smoothly, then on start-up I
get a message to the effect that "Not enough virtual
memory." I re-installed Windows XP HE and set the virtual
memory as high as it would let me, the reinstalled Windows
XP Professional - same result. After the message, the
computer reboots and goes through an endless loop. I tried
a safe boot, but had the same result. The computer never
boots fully. What can I do? Your help greatly appreciated.

Some questions... was the computer originally shipped with
XP Home or was that too an upgrade?
What are the computer specs, RAM, hard drive size and type,
motherboard and CPU?
Once you installed XP Pro you can't reinstall XP Home, so
you may have been installing multiple copies of XP and have
used all the free disk space.
Use the XP CD to boot the computer and begin an install to
see how many partitions are on the disk. You can then
delete the previously and unneeded partitions and XP
installs if that is the problem. You may end up having to
wipe the drive and doing a clean install, so be sure of what
you're doing and hope you have your settings and files
backed up.

How much real memory does your PC have?
How much free disk space do you have?
What hardware do you have?
