Help after reinstallation of Vista

Hi

I had to reinstall Vista after it refused to work with my video card
following download of SP1. The previous installation has two user accounts,
one for me and one for my wife. I have a number of questions that I would be
grateful if you could help me with.

1) Programs no longer work - will I have to reinstall everything?
2) We both need access to our old Outlook PST files. I know these were
probably kept in windows.old but is there likely to be any problems accessing
them? If so, what do I need to do?
3) Would it be easier to restore the old Vista installation and try a
repair? If so, how do I do this?

My machine was OEM but did come with a Vista DVD.

I'm pretty certain that you would NOT have had to re-install Vista to solve
this problem.

Depends on what sort of "re-installation" you did...

3) Would it be easier to restore the old Vista installation and try a

From where would you restore the old installation?

The reinstallation was a clean installation.

I was asked if I wanted to keep the old installation, which I did. This was
stored in the windows.old folder, along with all the user profiles and
folders (I can get to documents very easily).

Do not use the Import command as that can corrupt the pst file. Use File,
Open OL Data file on the OL menu instead. FYI, the Windows old file is hidden
and cannot be seen unless you select Explorer to Show Hidden and System
Files. But that does not contain your pst Outlook files.

The Outlook.pst file (along with other Outlook related files) are
stored in "C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook". If you
follow the same path in the backups made when Windows was re-installed,
you can find you old mail files for both you and your wife. Then just
copy the PST files to a safe location that is easy to find, and use the
Outlook Import command to import the mail from those PST files into your
existing Outlook installation:

- Open Outlook
- Select the "Personal Folder" item (the very top folder in Outlook)
- Click the "File" menu, then click "Import and Export..."
- Select "Import from another program or file" and click Next
- Select "Personal Folder file (.pst)" and click next
- Click Browse, and Locate the Outlook.pst file you want to import.
Click Open.
- Click Next
