*********HELP---1ch Domain Controller record problem after seizure operation

J

J.H

Dear all,
(I re-posted it because it might have been forgotten, but I need help please
!!)

Thanks for your quick reply Richard. Before I proceeded by your suggestion,
I demoted 3rd DC, cleared out the record of 3rd DC as domain controller 1ch.
So there is only 1 DC now with WINS on itself. I followed your instruction,
it is not created yet the 'domain controller [1ch] record. Do we have to
wait hours until the record to be created ? It was strange to me when I
added the 3rd DC in, the domain controller [1ch] record created
automatically on the 3rd DC.
Should I remove and re-add the WINS on 2nd DC ? (it might not be the case
because we were having bunch of record of servers, clients active on the 2nd
DC's WINS)

Please help, (any one please help !!)
Thanks,
J.H
'Domain Controller [1ch] record type' in the 2nd DC's WINS yet.

I supposed after the seizure operation (5 roles + PDC role also) to

the 2nd DC is supposed to have [1ch] Domain Controller record type in its
WINS, but it won't. Now the new added 3rd DC has [1ch] Domain Controller

WINS (automatically)

While 2k can and will sometimes use netbios, it much prefers and defaults to
dns, so if you're having AD problems, for win2k dc's especially, I'd
concentrate on resolving dns records instead of wins. The most important
wins registration for this would be your 1B record for the domain (with IP
address of the pdc) and you can look at the following to help with lmhosts
as temporary fix if nbtstat -RR isn't registering the records;
180094 How to Write an LMHOSTS File for Domain Validation and Other Name
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=180094

However dns is most important in any 2k domain.
Verify that you have a valid win2k dns server for your domain, see the 4 "_"
folders under your <domainname> zone in Forward Lookup Zones, and are able
to ping your domain name (xyz.com) sucessfully from any XP or 2k machine.
If dns is working properly, just about everything tends to work as well.

Hi David,

Thanks for your reponse. I have checked by nbtstat -A DC3_IP, the [1B]
record is registered (also20, 00,1C,1E,1D), but not in the WINS's 'Find
Name' database when I used WINS console to find those records. So far we
have no problem for domain validation, passwordchange, joining the
domain...etc, every thing seems to be functional. I was worrying of having
problem for not having [1ch] record, that will create the problem for master
browser role in our network (correct me if i am wrong).

- Do you have any idea why [1ch] does not get registered after the seizure
operation ?
- if there is no [1ch] record, what will be happening ?

Thank you very much,
J.H
