have Word 2007 yet can't open files saved as Word 2007!

I recently purchased Office 2007. The problem I'm having is that when I save
a file in the Word 2007 format (with it's default .docx extension) let's say
on my desktop, or anywhere in my computer for that matter, I can't re-open
it. I get an error message stating "This action is only valid for products
that are currently installed"

What the heck, I have the friggin' product installed!

So therefore, I find myself having to save everything I do in Word in an
older format, but then I confront the problem that some features from Word
2007 aren't compatible with older formats, like clip art, etc.

I'm seriously annoyed with microsoft right now.

HELP!
