Hard drive's partition is not showing the exact free space..

Hello
I m using windows Xp. the partition is which my operating system is residing is not showing the exact free space. When i manually (by selecting all the folders and rightclick ) see the used space then it shows 2.83 GB. the full size of my partition is 4.0 GB. but my operating system is showing only 248 MB Free space. I m also including the size of my Page file which has been included in 2.83 GB. Please tell me something about it. Is it a problem or operating system is aquiring that space.??? i m confuesed becz its wasting near about 1 GB...

MFT file will take considerable part of your NTFS partitioned drive space
and is not visible or counted as used space when using Explorer. Also System
Restore directory, if you are in using it, will not show. The only way to
tell how much space is used is by your drive is looking at the drive
properties. Let's not forget that drive that is rated 4.0 GB is actually
4.096 GB
