Hangs up at the window that says "starting up"

I upgraded from Windows 98 to win 2000 Professional. It
hangs up at the window that says "starting up". It goes
through the left to right process an d hangs at the end. I
tried reinstalling and now at the beginning of the boot
process it asked which system I want to use--DOS or 2
copies of Windows 2000 Professional. I tried both copies
of Windows 2000 Professional with the same "starting up"
results. What have I done wrong and how do I recover?

Have you tried formatting the hard disk before installing W2K? I don't
think that W2K likes to be installed over W98.

If you have data on your hard disk, first copy your data onto CD's or other
media before formatting your hard disk or you'll lose your data forever.
