hanging indents/list #'s

How do you create a numbered list from a document that you have pasted into
Word and get hanging indents to work? I've been going bonkers with spacing.
Each document has a 2" drawing canvas with pictures inside. The canvas runs
the entire length of the page. I am trying to number the directions that go
with the photos. I can get the first line to put the number at the margin of
the drawing canvas, and have a space between the number and the text. If the
text is more than 1 line long, I can't get it to align directly below the
line above. It always starts at the left margin.

More often than not, it also numbers the blank lines in between the steps in
the directions so I have to go back and delete them.

I've tried the "Defind New Number Format" dialog box, but I think I have a
glitch. Nothing moves or changes inside Preview box inside the dialog box no
matter what I do.

Thanks!

Make use of the List Number style to number the steps. To have spacing
between numbered paragraphs, specify a value for Spacing Before (or After)
rather than pressing the Enter key twice.

For text between the numbered items, use a style with a left indent.

I've tried using the "Define New Number Format" dialog box to get the spacing
correct - will try your suggestion. Just curious though - I can't get
anything to change in the "Define New Number Format" dialog box. The preview
window doesn't change - the lines never move.

Also, I've played with the list numbering before, but after I rename it, it
reverts to "list paragraph" when I display styles and doesn't show up in
Quick Styles at all. If I try to rename it using the name I've already given
it, it tells me that the name is reserved. I've tried copying the style from
template to template, also highlighting the numbers in the text, right
clicking, clicking again on "styles" and clicking again on "add to quick
styles" but it either doesn't show up or goes back to "list paragraph" and
again won't let me rename it.

HELP!!!!

You won't be able to modify the settings for numbered lists by modifying the
List Paragraph style (and since it is a built-in style, you won't be able to
delete and recreate it either). Instead, modify the List Number style as
desired.
