Its going to be my Media drive for my Mdeia PC. Going to record
movies, shows ect to it. And store my Divx movies and Mp3s on for
playback purposes.

One thing it must be quiet. Speed is not realy a concideration as must
hard rives are more than fast enough for my needs as well. But it must
be quiet.

I was leaning towards a segate Model Number:ST3250823AS Capacity:250
GB Speed:7200 rpm Seek time:8 ms avg Interface:SATA 1.5Gb..

I was going to go a Hitachi 250 gig. But they cosr much more for some
reason. Ive got a 160 gig Hitachi as my main Hardidsk and i cant be
happier with it. Quiet and relliable.

Thanks for any help.

/PS Anyone who recomends a Maxtor at this time is a DODO. Not thats
anything wrong with Maxtor. But bad drives comes in cyles and now its
Maxtors turn i thin. Atleast from what ive been reading.

Thanks.

Then the only option is a samsung.

Not as quiet as the samsung.

I like the Seagate option - they are the only drives that I buy. I
believe that they are the only manufacturer still offering a 5 yr
warranty. I'm sick and tired of W-D and Maxtor 1 yr warranties. I
don't know much about Samsung.

A quick check of PriceGrabber shows a Barracuda 7200.8 for $110 and a
Deskstar T7K250 for $117. Not much of a difference. IME, the Deskstars
are quieter and faster.

Actually it is 3 years for Samsung and the same for Maxtor with
= 8MB cache and >= 120GB, _unless_ you buy the retail package.

I like both Seagate and Samsung. Maxtor was cheaper some years
ago and under good conditions (good cooling, not too much load)
they are reliable, but not too quiet.

For some reason the Deskstars are more expensive arround my pc stores.

I suspect many here would not be likely to trust Deskstars again after the
75GXP debacle.

The inexperienced perhaps. _Every_ drive manufacturer has produced the
occasional bad design. If you let that turn you off of a disk manufacturer
permanently then it's not going to be long before you are forced to stop
using disks due to lack of an acceptable manufacturer.

I have to say I am not getting in any new Hitachi drives in for recovery
whatsoever.

Because of this, and my need for high capacity storage for one of my
recovery systems, I am even considering purchasing a few of the 500GB
SATA 2 Hitachis. Never thought I would see that happen - but it would
seem Hitachi are now producing quality again. Fingers crossed.

I am, however, still getting *lots* of Maxtor drives - even nearly-new
ones.
