Getting rid of Windows XP

J

jsaunier

My version of Windows XP blows.
All I have is problems.
My system is not loaded down with a bunch of junk, but it
performs like it.
Slow performance all the time, can't use it to play CD's,
can't get it to run Media Player.
Windows XP for me is nothing but problems.
I want to get rid of it and go back to a better system,
one that works.
I've tried all the trouble shooting I can stand.
Before I rip the guts out, maybe there is someone out
there who has some good worth while suggestions for this
piece of ---- people call a computer.

Is anybody out there?

Make sure your computer is ready for Windows XP, start with #3 Upgrade
Advisor:

Power off, open case and reseat all cards and cables.
If you have multiple sticks of memory remove/swap them out making sure
to stay at least the Windows XP Minimum of 64 mb.

Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
(Windows XP)
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Clean-up
Run Defrag.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)
This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:

XP was not designed for older computers. Is yours up to date?
To run decent you need AT LEAST 128MB RAM, to run GOOD....256MB+.
Processor should be at least 500MHZ, 1G+ is best.
If your system does not qualify in hardware....... you probably would
be better off dropping down to 98,Me, or 2000.

On a well equipped, well built machine XP is the most trouble free
version of windows to date.

The machine is fairly new, less than 3 years old.
It is a Dell Dimension 4300s, running a
Pentium 4 CPU at 1.60GHz,
1.00GB of RAM.
With that in mind, what else do I need?

More info please. Was it always slow? Just recently?
Is it XP upgrade? And if so, from what? SP1 installed?
