Get rid of Getting Started Task Pane

I know how to close the task pane. It's a pain. Is there
a setting that will allow me to open Word 2003 without
taking the annoying step to close it?

This is on the same level as having to close a popup
window when browsing the Internte.

Not sure about 2003 but in 2002 you can click the "Tools" menu, select
"Options", click the "View" TAB and uncheck "Startup Task Pane". Try that.

The only other thing I can think of is that your normal.dot (global template
file) is locked because Word was open when your computer locked up. When
that happens temporary files do not get deleted automatically and cause
cause a "read only" sort of effect. Try this:

1. Close out Word
2. Open Windows Explorer and search for a file names "~$normal.dot" (or you
can just do "normal.dot", or "normal")
3. If the file "~$normal.dot" is found, delete it
4. Close Explorer and re-open Word
5. Reset the check mark on then off, close Word, then come back in

If that doesn't fix it, I am at a loss, but I'm someone else might have
anotehr fix. Good Luck!

To get rid of the getting started task pane you can start Word with th
/n switch, this switch stops it from loading a blank document but als
stops the annoying Getting Started task pane also.

Go to properties on your Word shortcut, and add the "/n" as show
below:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE" /
