games freeze when I play 3d games

J

JR

Good day to everybody. I have a problem when playing 3d
games, coz it freezes/hangs my system.
I contacted the video card manufacturer and they told me
to assign a single IRQ to the AGP slot. There are 2 other
devices sharing my IRQ slot
I'd like to know how it can be done.
I'm running an athlon 64 on Asus k8v deluxe with MSI
fx5200 vtd128. The BIOS is ACPI enabled and my Plug n
play O/S is set to no.
I have read some articles in the KB and it says that I
have to reinstall winxp and manually configure the IRQ. I
just like to know if there are other ways and how
(detailed please).
Thank you in advance

Hi JR,

Shuffling the cards in the PCI slots will change their IRQ
assignments, as the IRQ numbers are hard coded into the
slots so to speak. Windows XP does not allow you to
change the IRQ assignments through the software, so it
is strange that they video card company told you to do
that without giving you any instructions or guidance. :*(

Basically 99.999% of the motherboards use the same
IRQ for the AGP slot as they do for the first PCI slot
located right next to the AGP slot. Therefore it's a good
idea to keep that slot empty, not so much because they
share IRQ's (since there are no longer conflict issues in
Windows XP) but more so to allow the hot air to move
away from the AGP card without being trapped by the
card you have in the slot beside it.

Jimmy,
Thanks for replying.
I can actually free the PCI slot that shares the IRQ with
the AGP, but there is still an onboard IEEE 1394 that
shares the AGP slot. (those are the two devices that
shares my AGP's IRQ). I was planning to make a sole IRQ
for the AGP, but I cud try freeing one PCI slot and that
leaves the onboard 1394 sharing the agp.
What do you think?
Thanks again,
JR

Hi JR,

http://www.intel.com/technology/1394/ puts the IEEE 1394
FireWire"* and "i.Link technology into perspective. You really
should not be affected by it sharing an IRQ with your AGP slot
as it's highly unlikely you're using such devices while you play.

Let's leave the video card tech's suggestion on the side for now.
Hardware issues can cause freezing, black screens and other
errors. Also, your drivers should always be kept up to date.

Try the following steps one at a time to try and resolve the issue.
I hope this helps. Please post back if you have any questions! :)

1. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

2. Dust your fans, vents and components using a 1/4" paintbrush
and a hose vacuum. Use compressed air for hard to reach places.
Set a housefan to blow cold air into your case to expose an over-
heating issue.. If it works add more fans or replace defective ones.
Use this Motherboard Monitor Utility: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

3. A faulty power supply can cause STOP errors, random reboots,
and black screen lockups. One way to test for that is to check the
wattage sticker on your power supply and then calculate your need
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ (Min. 350 for gaming)

4. Test your RAM using: http://www.memtest86.com/memt30.zip
after you extract that zip file, click on the README.txt file for the
instructions on how to create the boot floppy to test your RAM.
If you don't have a floppy drive use Microsoft's new Ramtest CD: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Jimmy,
Thanks for replying again.

I have already updated all all of my drivers(video card,
MOBO BIOS, directx etc.) and this still freezed my system.
Actually I disabled both deviced (onboard 1394 & PCI dial-
up modem) and it worked.
I'm planning to transfer my PCI modem to another slot but
I was thinking that eventually I have to use this slot,
in case the rest of my PCI slot are filled. So I'm still
considering assgning a unique IRQ to my AGP slot, if its
possible.
Thank you again.

Hi JR,

If it's possible, you might be able to do so in your BIOS.
You cannot assign the IRQ numbers through Windows,
not even through the registry by any means I'm aware of.

Yes, many BIOS have an option to set IRQs for the AGP/PCI slots, COM and LPT
ports. With the Plug&Play OS option also set Windows overrides those anyway.
You can induce Windows to change device IRQs that it assigns by moving
cards to different slots but it still assigns those IRQs and may share IRQs
even when there are spares. Unlike other versions, in XP you should
uninstall the driver for the card before moving it to a new slot. It is
common for the top PCI slot to share the same IRQ with the AGP slot and for
one of the lower PCI slots (depending on how many you have) to share an IRQ
with the USB host and/or ACPI. If you are having video problems
concentrate first on finding a card for Slot 1 that will coexist with the
AGP card. Or leave it empty if possible. Sound cards and ethernet cards are
potential problem devices.
