G-Mail redirecting mail without authority

I have been advised of a situation I would find very worrying if it
were true and i'd like to check if anyone else knows anything about
it.

A friend whose g-mail address is (e-mail address removed) (where xxxx is
his surname) - and note the one l in philip received an email from
someone who had inadvertently addressed it to (e-mail address removed) -
not the two l's in phillip.

Now he claims this is some smart redirection of gmail because the mail
was part of a series of mails to and fro, but the sender had actually
typed and miskeyed the name rather than using a "reply" function.

Now I have sent a test message to (e-mail address removed) (2 l's) and
it hasn't bounced and equally philip.xxxx@gmail (1 l) hasn't received
it. I have established that phillip.xxxx (2 l's) is not availabale
for registration at g-mail so assume it is validly allocated. No one
has respoinded to my mail - and I wouldn't expect them to because it
just said test.

My friend claims that it will have gone to the correct person, but the
original mail which was inadvertently misaddressed was redirected by
smart software at g-mail which recognised the context of earlier
mails.

I reckon that has to be rubbish, howver if it is true then it is very
worrying. - not that I personally use G-Mail.

Google has links for comments and help about Gmail.

I would drop them a line and see if they respond - you never know.

I think, according to my experience,
mailservers sometimes do such redirecting, not only gmail.
Maybe do some kind of address misspeling checking.
Or postmasters ?
