Frontpage Crashes Opening Pages with "Include pages"

H

Frontpage 2000
OS = WinXp Home & Windows 2000 Workstation (multiple machines)
Server = (Multiple) UNIX Virtual Hosts and Local Machine

Issue:
When attempting to open *.html files with <!--webbot bot="Include"
U-Include="FILENAME.htm" TAG="BODY" startspan --> (Include pages), the
application crashes to the desktop with no error message. When I check
the wecerr.txt file I see the error: "You are not authorized to
perform the current operation." with the time and datestamp.

This happens on the virtual server as well as the local copies.

Attempts to resolve:
I've repaired Office and Uninstalled/Reinstalled Office, to no avail.
My webhost has reinstalled frontpage extensions (from scratch),
however, this is happening on ALL my hosts.

I AM able to open files without "include pages" both locally and on the
servers with no problems.

Everything worked previously, and the only changes made to the
computers have been the Windows Updates.

Anybody else having this issue? Can you help me resolve this?

Thanks!

No good. Same thing. Crashes to desktop with no error message, only
error message I see is in the wecerr.txt file.

I've been using this application for several years with no problems.
This just started happening on multiple sites.

I can open pages without embedded include pages with no problem, both
on my local machine as well as on the remote server.
When it attempts to open a page with include pages, it first loads the
initial page, then, as it attempts to pull in the include pages is when
it crashes.

Thanks

MORE INFO:

I just created a "new web" locally, created a new page (index.htm) and
inserted an "include page" (includepage.htm) it worked. When I took
the same include page (includepage.htm) and inserted Javascript coding
(for an adserver) and opened the index.htm page - it crashed to
desktop.

The Javascript I am using is from fastclick.com and it's serving ads
correctly on the sites. It's only when I attempt to open the page with
the javascript (either included or just the page as it stands) that
frontpage crashes.

There is probably something in it then that is causing this to happen...
once when I added a comment line about saved from my domain in the metas ..
I got the crashing problem with include pages and shared borders on pages
that I'd opened with the code on. .. an extra space was all the problem
was... speak to the people you got the ad from to see if they can resolve it
for you, if you can't trouble shoot the js yourself, otherwise your going to
not be able to use it.

Hi Tina, thanks for your reply. I'm sure it's something in the
javascript, however, it all worked correctly just a couple weeks or so
ago. I've gone to fastclick to see if there is anything in the code
that is different from what I am using and it's the same as well. It
seems to kill Frontpage when it attempts to pull the image from the
remote server.
The only thing that has changed on either computers I've tested it on,
are the Windows Updates and I'm not sure if that might have had an
effect on Frontpage/Javascript or what.

I use the frontpage includes to put the ads on my pages, and, as ad
revenue is how I support the sites and keep them free, not using them
is not an option I can explore :)
Thanks again for your reply and any other suggestions you might have i
would surely appreciate them!

Hi hippiechick,

Some JavaScripts need to be in both the head and body sections of a page in
order to work. If you are using a type that needs to be that way..it
probably won't work when using it in an include page..reason being is that
include pages only include what is in the <body> section of the included
page. It might be worth looking at to see if that is the case with this.

Me again...sorry but I should have also said that if the script doesn't work
because it needs to be in both the head and body sections..you can probably
get around it by placing the portion that needs to be in the head section of
each page.. that has an included page in it. It would need to be done
manually though on each of those pages.

The code that is crashing it doesn't have to be in the <head> it just
loads a rotating banner ad :( If you'd like, i can email the code to
you and see if you're able to save it as html and open it with
frontpage? I dunno, I'm pretty much out of ideas. I may have to do a
global search and replace with Dreamweaver and just run the ads via
some SSI *.cgi script. That's like my last ditch option tho and would
require more work than i'm willing to put into it at this point in time
:)
I really feel that it probably has something to do with the latest and
greatest windows updates, as that's the only thing that has changed on
both my machines. 2 diff OS's and FP2000.
Thanks again :)

Hi hippiechick,

(From a 50something former flower child..I gotta tell you that I love that
screen-name!) :)

Some updates can and do cause some people problems..although this is one I
haven't heard of.

Have you tried to do any rollbacks (at earlier restore points) to see if
that might help? Or uninstall the latest updates if you can?

:)

I did a rollback on the win2k machine, (i've apparently gotten a little
over zealous and deleted the log files on the xp machine so until i
figure out a way to rollback without them i'm pretty much outta luck),
anyways, I did the rollback on KB912919 (because it looked really
suspicious) and it still crashes.
I also ran fpcleaner, no love there either.
It's just really strange!! One day it works, the next it's broken :(
I don't get it.

I've written the ad server and asked them if they'd received any
similar complaints, haven't heard back from them yet.

btw.. if i created a new page, entered the javascript in frontpage via
Insert/Advanced/HTML and "save as" the include file name, would that
show the adcode in "normal" mode? That might be a work around if you
think it will work :) I'm very comfortable working outside the wysiwyg
environment, so don't let the hippiechick fool ya :) In a former life
i was MCSE/MCT :)

<G>

FrontPage does not check for any "correctness" when using the
Insert/Advanced/HTML in a page...and it would definitely be worth trying.
You will not see that code in Normal view..but rather an icon where you have
inserted it.

I hate to even offer this up..but if everything else fails..you might want
to consider reformatting as a last option :-( And yes I know how painfull
that option can be.

reformatting is not in my vocabulary!! I'd rather buy a new machine :)
I actually solved the problem. I upgraded to OfficeXP and it all works
correctly now!! :) YAY!
I think that was MS's subtle way of letting me know that I should
upgrade :) It's all good. I did notice that OfficeXP doesn't display
the javascript in the "normal" mode and only shows a "Placeholder" type
image in the preview (which is okay with me, as long as it doesn't
crash!!)
Thanks for all your help!!
