Formula being displayed as text after a change is made in the formula.

The "=" is still there, in fact the cell states "=B$1" rather than th
actual contents of cell B1. ALSO, I have tried changing the cell t
"General" that doesn't work either. I'm wondering if my Exce
installation is corrupt. I have also ensured that th
Tools/Options/View/Formula is UNchecked. I have used this techniqu
for years... I can't figure this one out this time. STILL LOOKING FO
HELP. :rolleyes

After you changed it to General, you must now, for want of a better term,
"register" the change, by either clicking in the formula bar and hitting
<Enter>, or hit <F2>, then <Enter.

Change the cell number format to General *before* making the change.
Once you enter something as Text, XL no longer considers it a number,
therefore changing number format has no effect.
