Formatting: TOC, Hyperlinks appear as "{ TOC ...}" and "{ HYPERLINK ...}"

I believe i clicked on some Word control inadvertently, and now my
hyperlinks and TOC doesn't work properly. I've searched the docs and the
web and haven't yet located an answer.

The hyperlinks, which used to appear underlined and in blue, now all appear
in the format "{ HYPERLINK <URL> }", for example, "{ HYPERLINK
http://support.microsoft.com }" rather than "Microsoft Help and Support
Center", underlined and in blue, with same URL. Likewise, my table of
contents have turned into cryptic lines of the form '{ TOC \o "1-7" \h \z}'.

This looks like it ought to be simple to correct but i haven't found the
right switch. Insights appreciated!

Thanks, Kip.
