trying to understand if i should do a fixboot/fixmbr or a repair install.
situation: i've had a few issues with my machine recently, which led me to
reload some drivers, which led to getting the NTVDM issues re: illegal
instruction, and, in trying to fix this, i mucked up the boot.ini file. I
'recovered' somewhat - got the machine to where it can start up again using
the recovery console and bootcfg cmd. however, i am getting very erratic
behavior now - no taskbar (can;t get to the start menu, for example), all
desktop icons appear highlighted, can;t start notepad. one difference i see
is that my 'old' (working) boot.ini file had the default set to the d: drive,
but this is not specified in the one created with bootcfg. so, a few
questions:
- is there a way to specify this with bootcfg? (i don;t have a way to edit
the boot.ini file - i don;t have a floppy drive). i did not see way to
tailor the info much, but i am not a 'bootcfg' expert
- if not, going back to the initial subject, am i better off trying to fix
this with the fixboot/fixmbr commands, or should i do a repair install? i am
thinking that the repair install might fix some of the earlier problems (the
NTVDM issue), but I might also be more at risk of losing some files (which i
have backed up in case of emergency, but i'd rather not deal with the
recovery).
- if i use fixboot, would i write the boot sector to the d drive, or leave
it to default on its own?
Thanks
