Who to listen to when it comes to protecting my system
from all types of intrusions.

MiroSoft says, "Use our built-in XP Fire Wall and we'll
protect you."

Bell South says, "Oh no! Don't do that. We'll not be able
to feed you to/from the InterNet. We have our own Fire
Wall-type protection for you." Ya, and everyone CARES JUST
FOR LITTLE OLE' ME! RIGHT!

NOW, who the hell do I listen to? Can anyone out there
help this gubbible novice??

Try switching on the WinXP firewall and see what happens.
If you can still access the internet, leave it on. If
not, switch it back off. Also, you could try some 3rd
party firewalls, such as ZoneAlarm.

As a general thing, it's best not to rely on any computer
you don't directly control for your firewall, as you
don't know how secure it really is, or how often they
update to remove security flaws, but any protection is
better than none.

Greetings --

I certainly wouldn't leave the care and handling of my computer's
security to any 3rd party! Use the firewall the _you_ can control.
